This year, the annual competition is back on track as a regional event for the first time since the pandemic, allowing teams to compete with more participants.
Shell Eco-marathon area mileage competition is designed for experienced teams to push new boundaries, energize innovations and new approaches to achieving energy efficiency.
During the Asia-Pacific and Middle East Shell Eco-marathon 2023, students will compete their ultra-energy-efficient vehicles, which they designed and built themselves, in two vehicle classes categories namely Prototype and Urban Concept, with the aim of traveling the farthest using as little energy as possible
The Prototype class is focused on highly efficient and lightweight designs, usually with three wheels and designed to reduce resistance and maximize efficiency. While the Urban Concept class is focused energy efficiency in the form of a conventional four-wheeled vehicle design that is closer to a passenger car in appearance, with four wheels and designed to roadworthy specifications.
The participants could then choose one of three energy categories: electric batteries, hydrogen fuel cells, and internal combustion engines (gasoline, ethanol, and/or diesel).
Sean Winnett, Vice President of Asia Pacific Corporate Relations at Shell, said "We believe that with determination and hard work, students can achieve great things for their country,
This competition allows them to focus their efforts and creativity on advancing technology in the field of energy efficient vehicles which is essential for a cleaner energy future.”
The Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and Middle East 2023 will also feature several side events, including Shell LiveWIRE, an enterprise development program that promotes entrepreneurship, and Shell NXplorers, an innovative educational program that introduces young minds to complex and creative thinking skills for them to become agents of positive change.
The Shell Eco-marathon challenges high school and student teams from around the world to design and build the most energy efficient vehicles to address future energy challenges and promote smarter and sustainable mobility. (*)
